Il Furore

Very few places I’ve ever visited gave me the feeling as I had when I visited this volcano in Italy for the first time. I was a young photographer, just out of college and trying to make my way. Fifteen years later I went back to bring my wife to this unbelievable location. Thankfully, very little had changed. The raw power of the volcano was as mesmerizing as it was the first time I was there, and my wife was blown away.

I shot this volcano from the time the sun was still high in the sky until way after dark. It doesn’t erupt constantly and some times it doesn’t at all. But it was a risk I was willing to take. Thankfully, the great mountain let loose for us a handful of times as the sun was dropping. This may be the best shot and it was captured just before night fully enveloped the sky.
