Oneiros

Taken near my home on Maui, this dramatic seascape captures a surreal dreamlike state over the course of this ten minute photograph.  As calm and peaceful as this scene looks, it can be quite deceptive.  While taking this shot I was standing in a couple feet of water and getting lightly pushed around by the currents and tides.  I dug my heavy duty tripod into the ocean bed and raised the camera to a level where it wouldn’t get hit by the passing waves.  Then I added a neutral density filter to slow down the speed of the shutter. The sun had set nearly 20 minutes before I took this shot, giving me the time needed to keep the shutter open for ten minutes, and the residual effects and colors of the sky came out just right.  Even the slow moving cloud adds a subtle, contemplative element to the image.
