Artist notes:

Off the South coast of Maui there is an area called “LaPerouse.”  It is literally at the end of the road.  If you were to hike beyond there, eventually you would come to an area where giant rocks thrust themselves up out of the sea.  The jagged lava rock coastline here is quite treacherous and bereft of any vegetation.  Perhaps its most telling feature is the howling winds that careen through this area without rest.  Although I was shooting this image from a tripod, I was securing myself as best I could to the mountain behind me.  I could feel my pulse racing and my palms sweating as the wind blowing from behind was tempting my balance at all times.  As peaceful as this image seems, the reality of the conditions here are harsh.  But sometimes that makes for the most  memorable images!
